The college soccer transfer portal, explained

Thinking about transferring? Here's how the NCAA transfer portal works for men's and women's soccer players, and how to find programs where you're actually needed.

What is the transfer portal?

The transfer portal is the NCAA's system for listing student-athletes who want to transfer. Once your name is entered by your school, coaches at other programs can contact you about joining their team.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Talk to your compliance office first

Your school's compliance staff enter you into the portal and can confirm the current window dates, deadlines, and how a transfer affects your eligibility and aid.

  2. Step 2

    Confirm your window and exceptions

Division I sets specific windows by sport, and exceptions can apply (for example after a head coaching change). Dates change between years, so always check the current NCAA calendar.

  3. Step 3

    Get entered and become contactable

Once you're in the portal, coaches at other programs are allowed to contact you. Being in the portal does not guarantee a roster spot or scholarship.

  4. Step 4

Target programs that need your position

Rosters turn over every year as seniors and graduate players finish. Programs losing players at your position are more likely to be looking.

  5. Step 5

Reach out with a clear profile

Email coaches with your position, class year, eligibility remaining, highlight video, academic info, and when you can enroll.

Rules change often. Portal windows and eligibility rules are updated by the NCAA regularly. Confirm current dates on NCAA.org and with your compliance office before you act. This guide is general information, not legal or compliance advice.

Common questions

Does entering the portal mean I lose my spot?

It can. Your current school isn't required to keep you on the roster or keep your scholarship once you enter, so weigh the decision with your coach and compliance office.

Is the process the same in D1, D2 and D3?

No. Windows, notification steps, and eligibility rules differ by division and are updated often. Check NCAA.org and ask your compliance office for the rules that apply to you.

When should I start researching programs?

Before your window opens. Knowing which programs are graduating players at your position lets you move quickly once coaches can contact you.
